I haven't been back in the States since Sept. '10. Leaving the rental car place at the Atlanta airport, I'm realizing this is the first time I've driven a non-SUV in a year. I'm thrust onto a 6 lane highway whereas in Doha our widest is 3 lanes. I'm constantly looking in my rear view mirror for cops while watching my speedometer. In a year of Doha I've never seen a cop pull someone over for speed since they have permanent speed cams everywhere that'll nab you. I also have to get used to four-way stops again! None of those in Doha since we have roundabouts. The strangest adjustment? Suppressing the desire to honk at every car in front of me that doesn't haul ass when the light turns green. Has Doha warped my driving patience? :)
Aside from driving, my first few days have been pretty calm. I've been walking daily at the 3 mile Cochran Shoals trail at the Chattahoochee River. It's GREEN and shaded in the morning and there are a ton of Canadian geese on the river right now (hopefully I'll take some photos eventually). My dad also took me to the Buford Hwy. Farmers Market which is AWESOME. Tons of fresh and exotic produce, packaged and frozen foods from all over, a Russian bakery (of all things) and "American" products (so that you can attempt to get everything on your list in one place). Much better than the Dekalb Farmers Market we normally go to. We almost succeeding in knocking out my entire list with the exception of Velveeta Light.
Three days in and the pork count thus far is relatively low... only andouille sausage so far! My first night we went to Figo which is a tasty choose-your-own pasta place. I had the Ricotta Spinach Ravioli Siciliana (diced eggplant, fresh mozzarella and basil in tomato sauce topped with shredded ricotta cheese) which is pretty much all I ever get there. So yum! Looking forward to some old favorites while I'm home as well as trying out some new spot. If you're local, leave your recommendations in the comments!
