I knew Kevin wanted to take prenatal classes but could not justify to myself the $500 classes offered by the hospital/doctor’s office we’ve been visiting. I read online about prenatal classes offered by Aspire for just $55 (one month membership), including prenatal yoga, and thought I’d give it a try.
I joined for the month of May and went twice a week at night. The class was led by a Swedish midwife and yoga instructor (who loved to say things like “take comfort in the discomfort” and talking about certain poses feeling “yummy”) and the classes were timed so that Sunday yoga finished right before prenatal class. I have not done yoga in over 10 years, but found prenatal yoga at Aspire quite basic and relaxing. The instructor structured the classes to starting with relaxation, then around 40 min. of yoga, finishing with relaxation. I have never been one to really quiet my mind well, but found that these classes really zen’d me out. The only uncomfortable bit was going through guided pelvic floor exercises with a room full of gals. Another bummer? Sunday yoga from 5-6p followed by class from 6-8p - why keep a bunch of pregnant gals starving? All I could think about for most classes was how close McDonald's was.
I think the prenatal classes were a little light on content and details, but I’m supplementing with classes in Atlanta and think I’ll be good. These classes were held at Aspire’s women-only facility, but they do offer one “Father-To-Be” class that wraps up a month’s worth of classes in one night.
Aspire offers a ton of classes in addition to prenatal - a list of the schedule and classes is available online. Registration opens each month (and quickly fills up!) but prenatal registration is open all the time and never closes.
I'll close this post out with the video for my favorite song played during yoga...
