From London we took a quick flight to Dublin, landing late at night. We quickly realized that I booked all of our airline tickets based mainly on price and timing, not necessarily with whatever worked best for Adam's semi-schedule (meaning we had a bunch of late or early flights). Not a great idea with a baby that just wants to sleep! Fortunately our subsequent flights to Edinburgh and then back to London were less than an hour each... any longer and the stares from surrounding passengers might have bored a hole through my head.
We got into Dublin late on Friday night and the next morning joined our friends Holly, John and their running buddy Eva on a train to Kilkenny for the day. This trip was timed to the Savour Kilkenny Food Festival. We had some time to walk around the Kilkenny Castle and the awesome street food market that had been set up in one of the main town squares before our reservations for a beer/tapas tasting at the Grapevine Wine & Tapas Bar. The street food market had incredible looking retail and restaurant stalls... I kept kicked Kevin asking, "Why oh why do we have to go to this tapas restaurant? This looks awesome!" Fortunately the tapas tasting was delish - we had the opportunity to try some new and unusual bites.
We did a few touristy things in Dublin... saw the Book of Kells (meh), walked around the Trinity College area, caught a few of the big churches and trekked to the Guinness Storehouse (which is no World of Coke). Dublin has a subway system and a lightrail system and neither seems to go anywhere tourists want to go. Bummer. BUT, we did take both to get to the trail station and can report that they are super stroller-friendly. Restaurant-wise we had a great post-race dinner at 777 Mexican Restaurant and tasty fish-n-chips at Leo Burdocks. Kevin had an awesome run for his first marathon. The rain broke and even though it was cold he beat his goal time and everyone in our group that ran had a PR. Otherwise, Ireland was brief for us and a bit miserable because of the cold, wind and rain.
We were excited to move on to Edinburgh and we had an incredible time. The Edinburgh Castle, while not stroller-friendly in the least (cobblestone heaven), was a fun walk. We spent a good chunk of time escaping the rain at the National Museum of Scotland which might just be the coolest museum on earth. It's 1/3 Scottish history, 2/3 Natural History Museum, but truly just full of random interesting stuff. We finally got a break in the weather and trekked up Arthur's Seat for an incredible view of Edinburgh. Later that day we walked up Calton Hill for a great view of Arthur's Seat. Food-wise we had great hog rolls at Oink, decent and cheap curry at Mosque Kitchen and decent burgers at Red Squirrel. We absolutely loved Edinburgh... a great 3 day trip!
