Baby-led solids - the conclusion (well, so far)

Well, after weeks and weeks of research on baby led solids, at some point feeding the kiddo solid foods instead of purees became second nature and tada… we have a champion eater!

Here’s an idea of the variety he’s eaten by 13 months:
  • Fruits – apples, avocados, bananas, blackberries, blueberries, cantaloupe, cherries, honeydew, grapes, kiwi, mango, nectarines, peaches, papaya, pears, pineapple plums, raspberries, strawberries, tomatoes and watermelon (mainly absent from this list is citrus)
  • Vegetables – asparagus, beans (edamame, kidney, lima, pinto), broccoli, beets, carrots, cauliflower, corn, cucumber, green beans, mushrooms, onions, parsnips, peas, peppers, potato (sweet and white), squash (butternut and yellow) and zucchini (fails include Brussels sprouts, cucumber, okra)
  • Meats – beef, chicken, eggs, fish/shellfish, pork, turkey
  • Grains – bread, farro, pasta, quinoa, rice
  • Dairy –whole fat cow’s cheese, cottage cheese, milk and yogurt

Adam’s day usually consists of:
  • Breakfast – piece of fruit and a few spoonful’s of yogurt or cottage cheese
  • Lunch – meat, vegetable, starch
  • Snack – fruit
  • Dinner – meat, vegetable, starch

He will devour virtually any fruit, with the exception of some melons (which need to be fully ripe).  He is a bit pickier on his vegetables and rather than continue to offer him a huge variety we have been sticking to what works – beans, carrots, corn, mushrooms, peas, potatoes, squash and zucchini.  He is a meat machine and loves protein and dairy.  Grains have been a bit more difficult to work into his diet.  I am still trying to avoid processed foods, and though Adam gladly wolfs down toast he does not love plain grains.  He will happily eat rice in paella or quinoa feta salad.  He’s also recently taken to pasta.

We are still trying to keep him on a fairly healthy diet.  Aside from the cupcake at his birthday we aren’t giving him sweets (other than a taste here or there).  No real fried foods yet, either.  We recently took a two week road trip without any prepared food which was a bit of a shock to Mr. Healthy.  We kept to our routine foods as much as possible and the kiddo got to have his fill of “fun” kid’s menu stuff like quesadillas.

My true goal with BLS, other than to bypass making purees, was to get him eating what we ate, without having to cook everything separately.  To that regard I haven’t been as successful.  We eat a bit salty, processed and spicy so I don’t think everything we eat is appropriate for him.  Occasionally we will have a simple meal, like steak, potatoes and zucchini which works absolutely perfectly.   The kid also covets whatever we are eating, so on a recent night we were eating spicy chili over fettuccine and I gave him some to try which he loved.  He never ceases to surprise me.  Hopefully our diets will merge soon!
