Dune bashin'

We ventured out to the desert today with some friends to roll around the sand dunes on ATVs. I have never been on a 4x4 before and was quite terrified of flipping over or somehow hurting myself (remember Ozzy in the neckbrace?). Fortunately I made it there and back in one piece.

I started out a little rocky, choosing to not go as fast as the other 5 in the group (chilly tears shooting out of my eyes from the wind/speed combo). I watched as they all climbed up the first big dune and out of sight. I followed the same path and swiftly got stuck in the soft sand about 1/2 way up the first dune. I was too scared let my hands of the brakes and hop off mid-dune for fear of the thing rolling on me. I shouted for help thinking no one would hear me through the helmet but fortunately my honey came back for me. He reversed my ATV back down the dune and sped up the dune in attempts to reach the top and proceeded to get stuck just a few feet further up the dune than me. So at least it wasn't me, eh? :)

Fortunately I only had problems with the steepness of the first dune... everything else was a blast. One of the ATVs in our group pooped out and my friend Natalie went over a dune that was too steep on the other side and the thing flipped over her. These hiccups aside, everyone had a great time and we finished it all off with an American-style breakfast at Ric's Kountry Kitchen.

Check out all the pics at the end of our Doha 2010 album on Facebook.
