Qatar will host the 2022 FIFA World Cup

Our little country beat out the US, Australia and Japan/Korea to host the World Cup in 2022. Qatar is the first country since 1934 to host a World Cup having never actually played in a World Cup and will also be the first Middle Eastern host. One neat thing is that several of the proposed stadiums will have a modular design so that upper tiers can be removed and donated to third world countries.

We watched the announcement live on the internet and were excited to hear about the win. We then headed over to City Center in West Bay (downtown area) for dinner and promptly were caught in about 45 min. worth of celebratory traffic on the way home. Folks went crazy with honking, flashing lights, flags, kids hanging out of sunroofs and parking in the middle of the street to celebrate. The traffic was a little insane but it was neat to see folks so psyched.

Now the real work begins! 12 years to get ready so we expect to see a lot more construction and hopefully a few more western outlets (I'm talking to you, PF Chang's). Let's just start with getting the road outside of our compound paved, please?
